This project was formed in 2002 by Corey Loop and Ben Cooper. They wrote about 8 or 9 songs together, planned on recording them, then Corey moved across town and they more or less forgot about it. But in early 2003 they decided to finally lay the songs down. Alex Kane joined them for the recording process and played the bass and some guitars. And that was that. They never played any shows, or did anything with the recordings.

This is the same Ben Cooper that we know and love. aka Electric President, Radical Face, Patients.

Alex Kane is the other half of Electric President, so this might as well be an old school Electric President album.

It's officially available Tuesday 1-20, but it has been available eye patch and parrot style for a while.

I'm loving this.

Fresh out of Portland, Oregon, David Evan transcends the hipster image and exists on the level of pure artist. On meeting, it was evident that David was a minority in the field of musicians; his brain fueled by a sincere dedication to his art.

First instinct on listening was a reminder of Jeff Mangum, while existing wholly separate. David's music is a DNA like lyrical weave spun around the crisp sound of soul-thumping acoustic vibrations.

Shortly after the show, I contacted David, and we arranged an interview.

Here's what David had to say:

RFH: What drew you into music?

David: I always loved music. My dad was in a folk group in the 60s called The Penny Whistles and he exposed me to music right away, pretty much. By the time I was 12 I was listening to The Beatles and knew I wanted to play music.

RFH: And looking back at the music you grew up with, is there one artist that has influenced you more than any other?

David: I know how cliche it is, but i'd have to say The Beatles. I love all kinds of music and I listen to a lot of bands and artists, but I always go back to The Beatles no matter what else I'm listening to at the moment. I could give you a list that's way too long of other influences, but we'd be here a while.

RFH: I believe you..

David: My Myspace has a pretty decent though incomplete list

David: Technology is amazing. They may have even found a cure for HIV (which is much more important than Myspace).

RFH: Technology is great for sure. So. You have a new album out. What inspired you to create it?

David: I was living in Burlington, VT and in a band called "Lobot." We were doing pretty well out there, but what can a band really do in Vermont? So I wanted to tour and/or move to a bigger city, but the band wasn't really up for it so I decided to move out here myself. Chris Farnsworth was my co-writer/co-producer and guitar player in Lobot. We decided to record a bunch of our stuff as demos before I left, and it turned into a full album. I didn't release it until was in Portland for a little while. We didn't have a band name so just released it under David Evan. The good news is that he'll be here in Portland before the new year and we're gonna get a new band going and record a new-new album.

RFH: And Chris surely plays a crucial part in the touring aspect of things?

David: Well right now I'm just playing solo acoustic. It's fun to travel and meet people, but I gotta say- it's no substitute for playing with a full band. So. Once he gets here and we have a band going we will tour like that.

RFH: Cool.

David: Yeah, it's much more fun and I think a better show, and he's a great guitarist. He writes really original and interesting licks and he's a very unique lead player. All I can do is play chords to back my songs.

RFH: My turn for cliche time. desert island with one album. what would it be?

David: Hmm...maybe the White album. this question doesn't really have a good answer, you know? I mean, no matter what you take you're eventually gonna get so sick of it. Maybe a "Learn to speak French" course or something. That way I wouldn't get sick of it until I was fluent, and then if I got rescued by French people I could properly thank them.

RFH: Who is the best underrated/unknown artist out there?

David: I have to go local on this one. There are three, I think, and coincidentally they are all on my top friends list ;) They are: The Hand that Bleeds, Felicia and the Dinosaur, Ariana Lenarsky.

Portland has so much great music, but those are my top three favorites right now.

RFH: I've taken a liking to your music, and I know other people will. What's the best way for a person to support you?

David: Thanks! Really, the two most important things are word of mouth and financial support, whether it comes in the form of coming out to the shows or buying the album. I know people don't pay much for music these days, and I understand the reasons. I remember watching MTV Cribs many years ago and seeing Missy Elliot showing her gold-plated shower and four Hummers and thought to myself, "I never want to give these people my money again." Does Paul McCartney really need any more cash? But local bands and artists who are struggling really do need it. If you like somebody's music, it's a really cool and helpful gesture to shell out a few buck for some songs or an album.

RFH: What's the best way for a person to buy your music?

David: Beta is available by song or in its entirety on iTunes, CDbaby, Kunaki, and from my Myspace page. Also at the shows on old fashioned CDs, of course.

RFH: It's sad that CDs are old fashioned. My roommate just reminded me today about how cool floppy disks used to be.

David: Yeah, they were! When I was a little tyke I used to play with those old school green and black monitor computers that had those big floppy disks.

RFH: I bet you were a demon at Oregon Trail..

David: Ha! It was much easier getting here in a car than in the game.

RFH: But you probably didn't get to hunt or use a gun :)

David: ..No, I almost brought my ray gun that I got from a dead alien after a fierce battle, but I thought if I got pulled over there would be way too much explaining to do.

RFH: Ah, yeah that makes sense.

David: Cops hate ray guns.

RFH: Yeah :( Well, thanks for sharing your mind with us, David! Let us know when you have tour/music updates.

David: And thank you for the interview. I have one more solo acoustic show pending for January in Portland, and after that I'll be forming the new band with Chris. I had the great pleasure of doing an interview with an extraordinary emerging band from Idaho.

I was looking online for Electric President, and Nyr Lif appeared to me.

The list of influences made me giddy.

"For fans of Pinback, Sigur Rós, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, The Album Leaf, Nine Inch Nails, Múm, Death Cab for Cutie, Thom Yorke, The Postal Service, Rob Crow, Air, Bright Eyes, Electric President, Boards of Canada, Iron & Wine, etc."

I will add some aspects of Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes to that mix.

Here's what the guys had to say to some questions I offered:

RFH: Hello Nyr Lif! This is a two part question. As I write it feels like 60' outside. It is the 14th of november. First: is this global warming? Second: if this is global warming then is it really that big of a deal? :)

NL: Ha...global warming is always a good ice breaker. We'll just leave off with that. :)

RFH: So, to make a long story short, I stumbled across you guys online. The first thing I noticed was your distinctive band name (sidenote: in addition to the most impressive influence list I've seen to date). Can you tell us about that?

NL: Yea, I (Casey) came up with the band name when I created the MySpace page. I was kind of rushed for time then... so I broke out some online translators. It means "a new life" in Icelandic. It also rhymes with leaf, so it shows our Sigur Ros/The Album Leaf influence.

RFH: How long have you played together and what inspired you to form a band?

NL: Well, we've been playing together for a year and a half, which makes us look at each other and say, "Damn." It seems shorter. Shawn just contacted me (Casey) through MySpace, and I came over and jammed. Good ol' Space of My. We didn't really officially form a band, we just played gigs together, instead of separately.

RFH: What music have you each been listening to recently?

NL: Shawn's been digging the Tool, NIN, Electric Pres, Pinback, and some classic rock here and there. I've been getting into electronica recently, checking out bands like Hot Chip, Square Pusher, Mouse on Mars, etc, and my jeep has Give Up by Postal Service running on repeat, so I guess that counts as well. Can't get enough of Gibbard. Really can't.

RFH: If you were on a desert island indefinitely with only each other and the music of one artist, who would it be?

NL: We just came to the consensus that we would roll with Trent Reznor's music in Nine Inch Nails. It is too unique and diverse to pass up, it would cover our musical needs. Hardcore, trippy, calm, jazzy, electronic, everything. :)

RFH: Imagine Nyr Lif is a box of crayons and life is a canvas. What color would each band member be, and what would the picture look like?

NL: Shawn would be a certain shade of green if he were a crayon, which is pretty ambiguous. So I'll be specific. I would be pink crayon tinged with a hint of aqua-marine blue. Together we would form a unicorn. Or maybe a refrigerator, with alphabet magnets.

RFH: You could play a show anywhere in the world at any venue. Where would it be and why?

NL: Iceland. For sure. Not sure of names of venues there, or how to pronounce them, but maybe Jonsi would hook us up. We dream of Iceland everyday. If we could be reincarnated as a country, it would be Iceland.

RFH: What music have you released so far? Where can people sample or buy it?

NL: We released our first full length album on iTunes, so check it out there. But if not iTunes, our physical CD is for sale at CD Baby.

RFH: What are your plans for the future?

NL: Our plans for the future is just to see how things go. We would love to play music forever, it is an unparalleled passion. But we'll see how kind this world is, or how prepared we are to handle it.

RFH: Finally, why is music important?

NL: We'll just keep this part simple, before we conclude with a passage analogous to a 16 year old "about me" section, talking about how "music is our life."

And these guys definitely have their way with sound, taking hidden ideas and empty air, and producing filling rhythms and introspective peaks among emotional valleys.

i had the great pleasure of recording a live session with josh on the 11/5 show.

josh's music takes influence from everything between bloc party and folk.

and a cherry on top: josh (from england) played on guy fawkes day.

solid ground cafe: farewell salute

over the past couple years, chances are you have stumbled into solid ground cafe to catch a show.

(the new frontiers at the Cafe)

solid ground was more like Cheers than Wrestlemania.

going there was familiar and friendly, and bands/furniture were treated well.

musicians appreciated that.

i was blessed to play at solid ground more than once and likewise attended some incredible shows.

i couldn't say better things about the people that made this place.

chad, lawrence, kendal, sami, tanner, the hip old lady with the camera, and many more i was less acquainted with hold places in some of my fondest memories.

anyway,

things at solid ground have been wrapped up, but a final show will be held at Newsong Underground (SLC) wednesday with an all-star lineup.

yesterday afternoon:

after sitting down to enjoy a relaxing lunch, the first thing i notice about my hard boiled eggs after taking a bite is that whoever took the shell off missed a significant piece.

i needed the nourishment of the egg, however, so i continued chewing until the grinding sensations subsided.

then i felt better.

anyway

not so much music new music news this week.

although there is one artist i would like to share with you:

Shogu Tokumaru from Japan. Now this isn't the first time a japanese person has been linked to music in america.

anyway.

he has a new album out. it sounds really good if you like well composed, poppy rock music.

a definite listen for boy least likely to fans.

what is your show like?

my show is comprised of music from every genre that i find pleasing to the ears. a lot of local music and a mash of the latest and the greatest indie finds.

how can i listen?

you can listen to me on k-ute radio live monday and wednesday from 5-630 pm. if you are on the campus of the university of utah you can also listen through am1620 or on channel 66 in the dorms.
